This position will support LMAS programs, limnological sampling, and applied research efforts to collect, analyze, and interpret lake water quality data from lakes across New York State (NYS). Duties will involve water sampling and office activities associated with the three major lake monitoring programs run by LMAS. This is a collaborative position that will work with NYSDEC program staff to complete field season preparations and water quality sampling in support of LMAS and the Division of Water’s Drinking Water Source Protection Program. In addition to sampling, duties include conducting data analysis and interpretation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping, compiling reports and reference materials, and developing reporting outputs. Most duties will be performed in an office setting, but some day and overnight travel will be necessary. The successful candidate will hold a degree in limnology, biology, environmental biology, environmental science, or related field, have field experience, and proficiency with GIS, R statistical computing, and Microsoft Office Suite. Previous work experience with relational databases and water quality sampling analysis is preferred. Candidates with alternative qualifications or who have taken a less traditional career path may be considered if an aptitude for success and a strong willingness to learn is clearly apparent. COVID-19 vaccination required. This full-time position is based in the NYSDEC office, located 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233. Duties will be performed largely in an office setting, but with a need for travel, for which a valid driver’s license and private means of transportation is required. Occasional day and overnight travel are necessary, particularly between June and October, to participate in field sampling efforts and ability to carry 30 pounds across uneven terrain is essential. After six months of employment, this position may be eligible for a partial telework schedule for office-based duties, subject to approval and determined by program and office needs.
